You should also back up the Windows registry (see Windows - Backing up the Registry) before attempting any changes.

I remember seeing a Norton site with all the definitions and they would start every day with .001 and each update changed the last digits for that day.
They would not release each update but would test them and eventually pick the one to release.
Stop the symantec antivirus services Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition.5\ (this is for the version I am using 10.1.5)Delete all the folders and files within it.
Restart the servicerun live should update successfully now.
